As is the case every year, the Siena/Francis House will celebrate Veteran’s Day on November 11th. Veterans Day is a very important occasion here at the Siena/Francis House. Siena/Francis House staff go to great lengths to ensure that the homeless veterans who seek overnight shelter here know that their military service to our country is truly appreciated.
Why is Veterans Day so important to our organization? Because about 20% of all homeless persons nationwide are veterans. This equates to nearly 75,000 veterans on any given night. At the Siena/Francis House, 366 military veterans sought shelter in 2012. And, the Omaha community’s “2013 Community Point In time Count” indicated that 71% of all homeless veterans in Omaha/Council Bluffs were staying at the Siena/Francis House that night.
Below are just some of the many ways the Siena/Francis House serves veterans of our armed forces:

• Siena/Francis House staff members go to great lengths to identify homeless men and women veterans staying in our shelter, and to work with representatives of the Veterans Affairs to ensure that homeless
veterans receive all of the VA services due to them;
• Our staff works with many other local organizations that specialize in head trauma, post traumatic stress disorder and mental health problems to ensure that homeless veterans who suffer from these illnesses receive the treatment and therapies they need;
• Homeless veterans are moved to the top of the waiting list of our residential “Miracles” Addiction Treatment & Recovery Center…and are moved into that program as quickly as possible;
• Veterans in our recovery program receive employment training while they are here at Siena/Francis House. Our staff also helps veterans secure employment and housing outside the shelter, as they prepare for graduation from this program.
