How To Help

Volunteer FAQ

Who do we serve? Individuals who are experiencing homelessness.

What kind of volunteers are we seeking? We are looking for passionate volunteers who are interested in helping in our kitchen and dining room, laundry area, donation/loading dock and pantry and transportation.

Do I have to sign up or can I just walk in? All volunteer service requires advance sign up.

Is there a background check? At this time we do not complete a background check on volunteers, except for persons interested in assisting with transportation.

Are you still serving during COVID? Yes, although we ask potential volunteers to be at a low risk for COVID-19, determined by using CHI Health's online, COVID-19 self-screening questionnaire, found here: https://www.chihealth.com/en/patients-visitors/coronavirus-covid-19.html. If you answer yes to either of these questions, please wait 14 days before volunteering.

How do I find out about upcoming opportunities? Volunteer opportunities are posted on our website. Advance sign up is required for all of these events.

Do I have to attend an orientation? All volunteers must read and agree to terms and conditions outlined in the Siena Francis House Volunteer Expectations, waiver of Liability and Code of Conduct Agreement, found HERE. If you are interested in learning more about the shelter and our volunteer options, please contact Silvia Rodriguez, Volunteer Program Manager at srodriguez@sienafrancis.org.

How many hours are you required per week to be a volunteer? Commitments vary based on the volunteer position, as well as your availability.

What volunteer times do you offer? We offer a variety of day and times for service, including evening and weekend service.

Are volunteer hours guaranteed? Volunteer hours are not guaranteed. Though you might be scheduled in advance we may end your service early or cancel your service based on the needs of the shelter.

Does your organization provide meals or transportation to volunteers? No, we do not provide meals or transportation, but are near the local Metro Area Transit bus route and some local eateries in the downtown area.

How old must volunteers be? Volunteers must be at least 19 years of age to serve on their own. There are volunteer positions for those between the ages of 12 and 18, who are serving with an adult. Please see the detailed job descriptions for additional information, or contact our Volunteer Program Manager, Silvia Rodriguez to discuss possible volunteer opportunities for persons between the ages of 12 and 18, at srodriguez@sienafrancis.org.
